I told her my vision and she replied, “But I’m not wearing anything underneath this coat.” I climbed right up, looking down at her commanding the street. She owned every moment, standing there in that coat—with nothing underneath—and somehow made it feel completely natural, like it was the most logical outfit choice for the day.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhen we got back to the house she immediately changed into this massive wig. We got some shots and sat down for BBQ for lunch. She kept the wig on the entire time. It was the kind of room that would make almost anyone feel small...but not Arnold. He strutted in, looked around at all the women in this giant studio, and instantly, the air was sucked out of the entire venue. When Arnold shows up, you can’t help but wonder, “What am I doing here?” But once I got him focused, and he was trapped in my light, he was locked in to that moment.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe lighting was essential on his chiseled face, but more importantly, his eyes—the power of those eyes. I lit him in a way that dramatized all of his features, a little low kick of light in his eyes that made them piercing and dynamic. Billy and I worked together a few times before we shot Bad Santa. We’re pretty similar guys—skinny little rock-and-roller types, so we just hit it off. When we went to shoot Bad Santa 2 we were up in Montreal in the winter, three feet of snow on the ground, shooting in an old Shriners—one of those dark, private men’s clubs. Imagine a secret society for middle-aged guys in fezzes, drinking whiskey and doing whatever mysterious “man stuff” they did back in the day. It was straight out of the thirties or forties—it had this great character to it.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eA lot of times on movie sets, I have to wait around for hours for the opportunity to get time with talent, and I mean, they are making a movie at the same time, so I get it. Throughout the day, I get time with different actors. Kathy Bates, Tony Cox, and I get my pictures. Billy Bob is the star, so I’m waiting around for him all day long. But by the time I finally get him, the men’s club has lost its edge for me—it just feels like a set—but off to the side here’s this old weird 1940s bathroom with these dirty original porcelain tiles.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe end of the day comes, and the director yells cut, and his publicist wants to send him home. But because of our relationship, he comes up and says alright, let’s get some pictures. So I tell him, Billy, look. The set is great and all, but there’s this bathroom…I have to show it to you. He’s like…okay? So I bring him to the bathroom, and I tell him, a real drunken bad santa would probably be passed out on the tile of this beat up bathroom floor. He goes, Oh fuck yeah! And he gets right down on that dirty old floor.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt was the best shot we did for the movie. It became this image that he and I really love, and people love it too, especially around this time of year. So each year, Billy and I sign one, and we raise money for St. Jude’s Hospital. And the wild thing, Shriners donate to St. Jude’s too, so it came full circle with us raising money for the hospital through those prints. I had long hair, cowboy boots, bangle bracelets, and my Porsche; Bon Jovi and Jersey, I thought I was pretty cool.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI knew the Jersey shore like the back of my hand, and these guys were part of its fabric. This was a stepping stone in my career, I could just feel it, and I was going to do it big. I scouted this amusement pier that jutted out into the ocean in Seaside Heights. I met the owner, and I talked him into letting us shoot there. The day was wild...I mean, it was summer at the Jersey Shore with Bon Jovi. Word got out about the shoot, and suddenly, a thousand kids showed up, screaming for the band. I had to have the police lock arms to walk them from the Winnebago to set—the very public beach. It felt like a scene from A Hard Day’s Night—pure pandemonium.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eDespite all the chaos, I had to keep focused and get the guys to look good for the shoot. We shot on the beach and got these iconic shots, with Jon in his custom New Jersey coat, and then we moved up to the amusement park. I got them on all these rides—the twirl-a-wheel spinning around—it really matched the chaos of the moment, with all the fans screaming from down below. We set off on Route 66, and all through the Mojave desert, smirking with the high of the open road and Los Angeles behind us. When Brad’s bike disappeared into the darkness and off the road, all I could think was: Fuck. I just killed Brad Pitt. But with just some scrapes and bruises, Brad was okay - the only real damage was to the bike. I knew of a shop in Vegas that could fix it. Afterward the guys asked if they could ride with us. Before we set off on the road again, one of the guys threw out an idea: “What about going to the Chicken Ranch? My old lady works there.”\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe Chicken Ranch was a legal brothel in Pahrump, Nevada about 60 miles away. We went. Several women, dressed in lingerie, greeted us at the bar, donned with cheesy velvet banquettes and cherry wood tables. Brad walked into the hallway in a suit and tie, and leaned against the wall. The two women stood behind Brad, naked, lost in their own world. It was like a vortex. Brad looked off to the side while they looked into the camera. My 12-year-old nephew was a huge Chris Farley fan. I got permission from my sister to take him to LA with me for the shoot. We flew from New Jersey, and when we got to LA, I had to pick up my equipment from my storage space. It was late and the place was closed, so I jumped over the fence to grab my stuff. Next thing I know, there’s a police helicopter overhead and cops pulling up, like it was the crime of the century. My nephew was there, and all I could think was, my sister’s going to kill me!\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhen we got to the shoot, Chris was as animated as always, but he was so kind to my nephew. I wanted to do something old Hollywood with him, something dignified. So I pulled him aside and took this picture of him that was reminiscent of classic, Hollywood imagery. But then I realized, he looked like Fred Flintstone in this jacket. And there I was there with my handlebar mustache. The lawyer with the camera and lenses in his attaché case, and me with film in my socks. I think back on it like, how stupid—like I could have gotten arrested and ended up his cellmate!\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eHe walked into the room, with that signature charm, saying ‘God bless you, Mr. White!’ Six months later when he was released, Rolling Stone sent me to pick him up from prison. I rented a white Lincoln Continental stretch limo. He walks out in this jumpsuit with his jewelry and an ascot tied around his neck. He hops in the limo, and we drive to Augusta. He toured me around where he grew up, these homes with no running water. It was the other side of the tracks. People are calling his name, and I’m just shooting like crazy. Hanging out with James Brown, who’s just as wild as his reputation. It was kind of a shared moment every morning.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAnyway, I got hired to shoot him for the cover of Penthouse magazine. And I was like oh, this is going to be fun. He’s all about sexual innuendo, so I figured, let’s play off that. My assistant’s brother was a cop, so him and his partner came over, and we got some pictures, but they weren’t really doing it for me. And I’m like look, this is Penthouse—what if we did Howard as a centerfold? I could tell Howard was not super into it. But I told him about this old Burt Reynolds Cosmo shoot, where he was naked, but sort of strategically draped—it was this huge thing when it came out in the 70s. He was still hesitant, but I pushed. He finally said, “Okay...but only if I get to see the pics before you send them.” I never do that—I feel like it’s a disservice to the magazine that’s hired me—but I wanted this picture, so I said yes.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSo we do it, we got the shot. I brought the pictures to Howard at his studio, and nobody knows I’m doing this. It was hush-hush–the magazine would never know. He’s into it. So I’m good to go and bring it to Penthouse. I get on the subway, make my way back to my studio, and as soon as I walk in the door, my assistants are freaking out: “Oh, my God! Howard’s on the air, and he’s talking about you!” He told the whole story—totally sold me out! It was worth it, though.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eFast forward, and he asks me to shoot the cover for his book, Private Parts. He walks into the studio and these two strippers, who proceed to get unabashedly undressed and pose with him. But this time he was down to take it up a notch. He got naked too, and we got the strippers covering his privates. I started shooting portraits of my cars. No people, no distractions—just dusty jalopies parked in fields, with these beautifully composed landscapes. The cars each had personalities, and I tried to capture their essence, the same way I captured it when I shoot people.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eUnlike glossy, pristine car photos, my cars were ratty, dusty, and funky. I’d buy ones that were beat-up and fix them up just enough to drive around. The way I shot them was also different. I only used Polaroid positive-negative film, with this vintage camera I loved. I’d peel the film, see what I was getting, toss it in a water bath to clear the junk from the Polaroid, and end up with this gorgeous negative. It had a little vignette that framed everything perfectly. It gave the photos a vintage, nostalgic feel that matched the cars and my love for black-and-white movies—film noir from the ’30s and ’40s.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eEvery weekend I’d get stoned, take one car out for a drive, come back, switch cars, shoot a little. I’ve been so lucky to have photographed some of my idols...one of the greats being Al Pacino. The Godfather, Scarface, Dog Day Afternoon—all burned into my brain, a part of my personal library. He’s always been this great influence on me—his career, his work ethic, and his approach to really just giving himself totally to his craft.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI’ve always been in awe of him. His stature is small, physically, but his on-screen stature transcends most actors, for sure, and most roles. So to get the opportunity to work with him for Scent of a Woman was really special. It was humanizing, shooting with him. He was playing this blind man and yelling out constantly for capuccinos. We’d get a shot and you’d hear “I want another cappuccino!” Either from Al himself or someone else on the cast doing an impression. He allowed me to direct him, and he was totally open to my direction. It was one of those life-changing moments for me. I got to be one of Al Pacino’s collaborators. It was a big deal.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eLater I shot him again for Ocean’s Thirteen. The room was stacked—George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon—this group of super important people. Al walks right up and he’s like, “Okay what do you want me to do?” Out of that came this one picture, a tight headshot of him completely locked in to that Pacino character. Years after that I had an exhibition at the Bel Air Hotel and hung that shot, huge, 50x60, right over the fireplace in the lobby.
