Guns N' Roses
Harrison, New Jersey 2
Guns N’ Roses, Asbury Park NJ, 1988. In ‘88, I shot Guns N’ Roses for their first small picture in Rolling Stone. Six months later, ‘Appetite for Destruction’ hit, and they skyrocketed to fame. Rolling Stone called me back to shoot a cover story. We traded Hollywood for Jersey, shooting in a hotel conference room amidst their tour chaos, and then I thought, I’m in New Jersey, my backyard. What can I do here?
I knew of a gritty biker bar in Asbury Park called Mrs J’s. By the time I got them into the van it was 2:30 in the morning. The bar was wild, everyone wasted. Very quickly, I realized these cool Hollywood guys were intimidated by these hardcore bikers. I stood on a pool table, trying to do a shoot in the middle of bedlam. The band was worried about getting into a fight, but I tried to keep everyone focused. I captured Slash on the table in a Jiffy Condom tee - and this was before anyone really knew them yet - you can tell from the biker judging them from behind.
