Jerry Lee Lewis, Memphis TN, 1989. Jerry Lee Lewis was notorious for being a bit insane. He had this crazy attitude, crazy hair, crazy music. He married his 13-year-old cousin. You know, the guy was pretty out there. But man, he was also one of the godfathers of rock and roll.
I ended up shooting the movie poster for Great Balls of Fire, which is the story of his life. Dennis Quaid played him in the movie, and Jerry ended up doing some shots with Dennis for me for the movie poster. I got some time to shoot alone with him, and we went down to the basement of this location on Beale Street. He was erratic, and hard to pin down. Even in his old age, he was just full of energy. So we did some shots down there, and at a piano, and then he asked if his family could come and join him.
I said of course—I’m all for capturing those special moments with people. So I do these pictures, with him and his wife and their young kids, and its cute and wholesome and whatever, and we move on with our lives. Then fast forward, like 10 months, and it’s Christmas time, and I get a Christmas card in the mail from Jerry Lee Lewis! It’s my picture of him and his family on there, on the Lewis family Christmas card! I was like, what the fuck? How did he even get this picture? But it was hilarious, and it was very Jerry...so I let it slide. And of course, I still have that Christmas card.
Each photograph is produced as an archival pigment print on Canson Platine Fibre Rag paper. All prints are hand-signed by the artist and offered as editioned Artist Proofs (A/P).
