Matt Dillon
NYC, 2006
Matt Dillon, Manhattan NY, 1990. Matt Dillon, Manhattan, 1990. Matt was on fire at the time—walking around the streets of New York like he owned the place, and he knew it too. I wanted to capture something deeper than just another ‘tough guy’ shot, so I took him, my crew, and my camera for a walk through my neighborhood. We ended up in this old auto repair shop down the block from my place. The office was lined with photos of the owner’s kids, taped up in rows on the wall—something so tender and innocent. I sat Matt down right there, his rugged, too-cool-for-school attitude playing off those soft family moments in the background. The contrast was magic.
Later, I had him stand in the garage, surrounded by years of grease, oil stains, and grime. It was pure New York grit—rough, unapologetic, and real. It wasn’t just a portrait of who Matt was; it was my way of turning a run-down shop into a moment, an emotion. Yeah, he was cocky, but that attitude made it all the more authentic. There’s something about the right location and the right attitude that turns a simple shot into something unforgettable.
