Nelly, Harlem NY, 2006. In Harlem, underneath the West Side Highway, there is this elevated portion of the highway that’s like a hundred feet tall. At that time, all sorts of crazy shit went on up there, from drugs to prostitution. If you wanted to burn a car, that was the place to do it. I’m shooting Nelly, so what am I gonna do? I rented some Saint Bernards.
They were lazy as shit. They fell asleep while he was standing there in the middle of the road. Nelly’s wearing these six-carat diamond studs in each ear, dressed to the nines in a suit, and he’s in this gritty, smelly, dirty roadway, with these three dogs asleep and drooling on each other. It was just fabulous.
Each photograph is produced as an archival pigment print on Canson Platine Fibre Rag paper. All prints are hand-signed by the artist and offered as editioned Artist Proofs (A/P).
