Robin Williams
NYC, 1995 5
Robin Williams, Manhattan NYC, 1995. Robin Williams—what can I say that hasn’t been said? He had the most brilliant, fast-paced mind on the planet. Watching him think was like watching a whirling dervish in action—synapses firing left and right in his brain. He was always connecting things, firing on all cylinders.
This particular shoot was for the Birdcage movie poster, with Nathan Lane. I hired a prop stylist who brought an entire room full of props. There were lipsticks, robes, pillows, and bird cages of all sizes...some even big enough to stand in. After the pillow fight, Robin took a single feather, gently put it in his mouth, like the cat that got the canary. It was instantaneous, and the entire shoot was like that. He just kept grabbing props, doing something, tossing it back, and grabbing another, and I kept shooting. It went on for two hours straight—he was on fire. The next day my face hurt from laughing and smiling so much...it’s something I’ll never forget.
