Sophia Loren
Malibu, CA 1996 9
Sophia Loren, Malibu CA, 1996. Getting the call to work with Sophia Loren for the first time was a dream job - a photographer’s dream. When she showed up alone at 9am, and by alone, I mean, completely. No publicist in sight. I asked her how long she had to shoot. I was expecting an hour, maybe two max, like most of the celebrities of that level. She takes a pause, and says, “Well, I have until like 4:30pm.” I was shocked, but excited that she trusted me enough to give us this time, to make something special, together.
Sophia is the kind of actress, the kind of personality, the kind of superstar, that is so big, that she doesn’t have to act big. I was in awe of her stature - who she is as an artist and a personality. Yet, she was a total collaborator, and allowed me to direct her. We were on the beach, and she’s wearing these amazing gowns, and she’s running right into the water, she’s draping herself across the rocks. To shoot her in this bright sunlight as a 70-something-year-old woman, trusting me to make magic with her, was incredible. She was really free. In every outfit, and every situation, we were able to create these iconic moments, and we continued to work together many times over the next few years.
Each photograph is produced as an archival pigment print on Canson Platine Fibre Rag paper. All prints are hand-signed by the artist and offered as editioned Artist Proofs (A/P).
