Susan Sarandon, Manhattan NY, 1994. My first shoot with Susan was early on in my career. She had this fabulous reputation as an actress, and a cult following from the Rocky Horror Picture Show, but she was so down to earth and so wonderful. We just liked each other. I had a studio with this whole staff, we always had people buzzing around, and yet we were all instantly comfortable and connected.

I photographed her over and over and over again. I don’t know how many shoots we’ve done, but lots, maybe 20 or 25. She was really New York, not a “Hollywood” actress type. She was fashionable and sexy…and volumptuous, but she could also get down and dirty. And I mean that literally—if I asked her to lay in the gutter for a shot, she’d lay in the gutter, gown on and all.

So over time we’ve created this beautiful body of work together. She had a big family, a daughter from her first marriage, and two sons with Tim Robbins. One of the photographs that I shot early on, she had her young baby Jack. He was maybe 3…at the most…maybe younger. He was on set running around completely naked. She’s on set, wearing this billowy skirt-shirt kind of deal and pantyhose, and the skirt goes down to mid-calf. And her son runs in and hugs her leg, face under the skirt and little tiny body peaking out below. It was this hysterical loving moment, and really special to capture.

Almost every time I shot Susan, the kids were there. They would show up on their way someplace, needing money before they went out for the evening or just to say hi. But they would always stop by and see her. And almost always, when her children showed up for a shoot, I somehow got them on the set and did something with them together. Like this shot of Susan in this red sultry set up, that’s her daughter Eva’s hand reaching in towards her. It was this beautiful familial thing.

And my crew was always the same, a family in its own right. Our shoots became this warm, open experience that we repeated over the years. I miss her. I haven’t seen her in a long time, and I miss her.
